Jurassic World Rebirth: What We Learned from the Final Trailer

Universal Pictures has released the final trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, the latest in the Jurassic World film series. The 2025 film, starring Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, is scheduled for release on July 2, 2025—just in time for a Fourth of July weekend bonanza.

Jurassic World Rebirth, as its title suggests, is both a reset and a reference to the franchise’s roots. This is the fourth film in the Jurassic World series and the seventh in the entire Jurassic franchise, following Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park in 1993. The film, which was originally titled Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, was directed by Gareth Edwards and written by David Koepp. Edwards directed 2014’s Godzilla, and Koepp has a long history with the Jurassic franchise, having written the original Jurassic Park as well as The Lost World, the sequel from 1997.

The trailer synopsis: Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the Earth’s environment is less and less habitable for dinosaurs. The few that remain have been relegated to small, man-made equatorial preserves designed to approximate their ancient ecosystems. Three of the largest land, sea, and air dinosaurs in the world are in a tropical preserve, each of them housing the genetic key to a drug with the potential to save millions of lives. Scarlett Johansson’s character, Zora Bennett, is sent on a secret mission to infiltrate this preserve and extract that genetic code. The military operation intersects with a group of vacationing boaters, one of whom witnesses the attempted extraction by the marine dinosaur in the film’s trailer and sends his family to a remote area of the ocean. In that area is an island that the family mistakes for land, but this is no vacation. The island has been abandoned by humans for decades, a former research facility for a secret Jurassic Park project. The trailer hints at some old secrets on the island that are more terrifying than dinosaurs.

Lead and Supporting Roles

Jurassic World Rebirth is sure to be a big event film for 2025, but what will that mean for the performance roster? Johansson and Ali will star in the film alongside several other high-caliber names. Rupert Friend plays Martin Krebs, a pharmaceutical company representative with more hidden motives than a gated community in a Soviet-themed capitalist dystopia. Jonathan Bailey plays paleontologist and dinosaur researcher Henry Loomis, while Manuel Garcia-Rulfo portrays Reuben Delgado, the patriarch of the shipwrecked family that makes for some of the film’s major supporting players. Delgado’s children are played by Luna Blaise, David Iacano, and Audrina Miranda, while Bechir Sylvain plays a member of the team sent in on the top-secret dinosaur genetic retrieval mission. Ed Skrein and Philippine Velge both appear in as-yet-unannounced roles.

A Tale Told Again

Jurassic World Rebirth feels like a familiar story. A lot of the same footage is being repurposed from the first trailer in February, though with a new voiceover artist. You might recognize some of the quieter scenes at the beginning of the trailer, specifically the part in the laboratory with the worker in the hazmat suit who tries to scream for help, only to realize it’s too late. From the lab, we cut to Zora Bennett as she and her team go in for the extraction. Despite the frenetic beginning to the film, fans should expect to see plenty of narrow escapes, a little camping in the jungle (though we know this isn’t camping), and more dinosaur terror.

Fans of the original Jurassic Park will recognize the massive pterosaur egg that some characters attempt to steal. We hear one character mention that this flying dinosaur is “a flying carnivore the size of an F-16.” Based on its size, this is almost certainly Quetzalcoatlus northropi, the largest pterosaur that has ever been discovered. The trailer also drops a few other creatures in the mix, like the raptors that are now synonymous with the franchise and a terrifying mosasaur that appears to attack characters in one of the more ominous shots. Dialogue in the trailer suggests that the island chosen as a dumping ground for all of this dinosaur DNA was intentionally picked because it could house “the worst of the worst,” the most dangerous creatures that they had on hand.

All the ingredients are here for Jurassic World Rebirth to reset the franchise, right down to a scrappy team of people with few personal connections to each other, science with questionable ethical limitations, and the question of just how far you can go for the greater good. Johansson’s inclusion in the cast also signals a rougher, grittier edge to this familiar tale. More than a last-minute throwback to the original Jurassic Park research site, there is more than enough in this last trailer to make Jurassic World Rebirth a different beast altogether.

Jurassic World Rebirth is scheduled for release on July 2, 2025, in theaters nationwide.
