As Sentencing Looms, Trump Mulls Diddy’s Future

Hip-hop titan Sean “Diddy” Combs is back in the news as former President Donald Trump comments on the potential for a presidential pardon. During an interview on Newsmax’s Finnerty on Friday, August 1, Trump was asked whether he would pardon Combs, who was found guilty last month.

In July, a jury found Combs guilty of one federal offense—transportation with intent to engage in prostitution. He was cleared of other serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. The seven-week trial was a whirlwind of accusations, witness testimonies, and drama. Among other things, singer Cassie Ventura, formerly of making the charts, claimed Combs abused and trafficked her while they were romantically involved. Combs has denied any wrongdoing and maintains his innocence.

During the Newsmax interview, Trump was asked about the potential for a pardon. The former president was noncommittal but didn’t close the door on the possibility, “Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent,” Trump said. “He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good o victory.”

Trump’s comments also suggested he and Combs were once close, “We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” Trump added. However, he also admitted that things changed when he entered politics. “He used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

Potential Pardon Past

Trump has also spoken on a potential pardon for Combs in the past. During a press briefing at the Oval Office in May, Trump was asked a question by Fox News reporter Peter Doocy. Trump was asked if he would pardon Combs, had not spoken to him in years, and would consider it.

“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump responded. “If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me. I would look at the facts.”

As for Combs’ ongoing legal drama, the rapper/producer was convicted of one charge of transportation with intent to engage in prostitution in July. While he was cleared of sex trafficking and racketeering, that remaining charge is still significant. He now faces a potential 20-year prison sentence and is set for sentencing on October 3.

The whole trial, which stemmed from a multi-defendant federal probe, has sparked much conversation about celebrity, punishment, and presidential power. Trump’s involvement in the case, both as a judge and potential pardoner, adds another level of intrigue. Despite some clear interpersonal complications, Trump also insists he could look at the case objectively.

“He was celebrating a victory,” Trump told Finnerty, “But I guess it wasn’t as good a ofvictory.”
