Ironheart Marks MCU’s Return to Gritty Street-Level Stories

Ryan Coogler has had a very good year. After a recent box office win with his new film Sinners, the Oscar-nominated director has already returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with an upcoming project called Ironheart. The studio has shared a new teaser trailer for the limited series ahead of its June 2025 premiere.

The six-episode Marvel series is set in the MCU and stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, also known as Ironheart. The character was Tony Stark’s protégé in the comics and is a teenage tech genius. Ironheart will serve as the final television release in Phase Five of the MCU’s future slate.

Marvel initially announced the series back in December 2020 with a scheduled release of 2023. That release was later delayed as Marvel shifted its long-term plans for the MCU, and released fewer movies and series in a given year to prevent market saturation. The move was made in part due to the challenges of the previous phase, which in 2022 included 11 films and series. The premiere will take place this summer instead.

Marvel revealed some footage from the series at the 2024 D23 convention in Anaheim, California. The presentation dubbed the show “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center” and stated that it will “unpack questions of morality in a way we haven’t before” in the MCU. The trailers and show materials from Ironheart seem to suggest that it will be a darker and grittier series compared to previous MCU shows.

Ironheart Features Riri Williams from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Riri Williams made her first on-screen appearance in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the sequel, Riri became embroiled in a battle with Namor and his blue-skinned army when she created a vibranium detector while attending MIT. As she and other students worked on their projects, a vibranium detector that Riri had created during a science class inadvertently detected Namor and his people while they arrived in Wakanda.

Riri was able to bond with Shuri as they shared a love of science, and by the end of the movie, she created an armored suit in the image of Iron Man to help the Wakandans defend themselves against Namor. Riri had to leave the suit behind when the Wakandans prepared to resume their isolationism at the end of the film and returned to her life as a student at MIT.

Plot Synopsis for Ironheart Revealed

Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka “The Hood” (Anthony Ramos).

Lyric Ross will star as Riri’s best friend, Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich as Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana as Cousin John; Matthew Elam as Xavier Washington; and Anji White as Riri’s mother, Ronnie. Shea Couleé will play a character named Slug. Jim Rash will also return to the MCU as the dean of MIT, a role he first took in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen will also star in a role not yet revealed by Marvel.

In the trailer, viewers find Riri at a closed-down pizza shop, trying to figure out a way to break in. She is soon trapped by an elevator full of poison gas and is given only two minutes to find an exit. However, she’s just been lured there by The Hood for a kind of interview, which involves her breaking into a floor-mounted case and retrieving a gas mask to breathe. Riri refuses to play along and instead uses her creative ways to escape.

Impressed by her creativity and intellect, The Hood makes Riri an offer to join him on some sort of heist or venture. Riri is wary at first, but then is struck by the opportunity to make something truly “iconic” and has second thoughts, despite the warnings of her friends and family. Natalie voices her concern over the plans of Riri and The Hood, but The Hood might not be as innocent as Natalie makes him out to be, as he also tells Riri, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”
