A girls’ volleyball team in California was scratched from its schedule a second time Friday after other teams in the district forfeited games against the team, deepening a controversy involving one of its transgender players.

Maribel Munoz, whose daughter plays on Jurupa Valley High School’s girls’ volleyball team, told Fox News Digital that the team had two more games scratched. A coach with the team, Liana Manu, emailed parents about the forfeits on Friday. The games affected are matches scheduled Aug. 25 and Aug. 29 against Rim of the World High School and Orange Vista High School, respectively.

Jurupa Valley Unified School District (JUSD) shared a statement about the forfeits that clarified the decision to do so was not its own. “We understand and acknowledge the disappointment of our Jurupa Valley High School athletes who are ready and prepared to play,” the statement read. “Decisions to cancel matches were made by teams in other districts.”

The district in the statement went on to make clear it must follow California law, which prohibits discrimination against students based on gender identity. It said schools are required under Education Code 221.5 (f) to allow students to play on athletic teams consistent with their gender identity. The statement added that this guidance on transgender athletes is consistent with the views of California Attorney General Rob Bonta and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.

“We are proud of our JVHS Jaguars and their willingness to play any team and represent their school and our district with pride,” the district added, saying it was working to reschedule games so the students would not lose playing time.

The announcement came after the team’s Aug. 15 game against Riverside Poly High School was forfeited by Poly, and at least one member of the Riverside Poly community has confirmed to Fox News Digital that the decision was based on the fact that Jurupa Valley High School has a transgender girl on its roster. That player, senior AB Hernandez, is expected to be the team’s starting setter. Members of the Riverside Poly community, including the family of Hernandez and a local school board member, have spoken to Fox News Digital about the decision.

In the latest volley of the controversy, Hernandez’s mother, Nereyda Hernandez, spoke out on the issue in a statement released after the game’s cancellation and the decision by Riverside Poly. Hernandez said she was at one point opposed to her daughter playing on the team, but after a meeting with her that was accompanied by an education session on transgender people, the teen’s mother said she gained a new understanding of the issue.

“I understand the discomfort some may feel, because I was once there, too. The difference is, I chose to learn, to grow, and to open my heart,” Hernandez said in a statement to Fox News Digital. It’s a pressure cooker for students, who only want to play, as well as families who are suddenly finding themselves at odds with neighbors and parents of their children’s teammates.
