With its most sophisticated and potent Corvette to date, the ZR1X, Chevrolet is once more raising the performance standard. Revealed alongside the ZR1, this electrified beast will formally arrive later in 2025 and usher in a new era of hybrid muscle for the venerable Corvette nameplate.
This goes beyond simple evolution. The ZR1X has the statistics to support this revolution that pits American engineering against the best from Europe. the Brains of a Machine, the Heart of a Beast
The 5.5-liter twin-turbo flat-plane V8 at the center of the ZR1X is the same motor running the conventional ZR1, generating 1,064 horsepower (783 kW). Chevrolet did not stop there though. Running on a 1.9 kWh battery, the front-mounted electric motor included in the ZR1X stores 26% more energy than the E-Ray’s pack.
The combined 1,250 hp (919 kW) comes from that motor adding 146 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. This hybrid Corvette, with all-wheel drive at launch, runs 0–60 mph under two seconds, the fastest Corvette ever.
Not all, though, is about acceleration. Even if the car is carrying extra weight to replicate the hybrid system, the front axle disengages to lower drag once the car reaches 160 mph (257 km/h), so enabling it to reach a top speed of 233 mph (375km/h), matching the top speed test of ZR1 at Papenburg, Germany.
Braking, Handling, and Hardware Improvements
Chevrolet understands that speed devoid of control is useless. Thanks to Alcon, and first for General Motors, the ZR1X features large 16.5-inch carbon-ceramic brake rotors at all four corners.
Under performance testing, the brakes pulled the ZR1X from 180 to 120 mph using an eye-popping 1.9 Gs of deceleration. The grip is likewise rather remarkable. The ZR1X can pull 1 G of lateral and longitudinal force at the same time, despite weighing almost 500 pounds (227 kg) more than a Z51 Stingray — evidence of its sophisticated chassis and traction systems.
That capability needed redesigned hybrid systems. Early E-Ray models developed front-motor anomalies, particularly under regen loads. The system of the ZR1X was polished to remove those issues, so enhancing its handling of sensor calibration, torque transitions, and tire deformation under high acceleration.
Driving Styles and Smart Restraints
Designed for various settings, the ZR1X offers Tour, Weather, Endurance, and Qualifying driving modes. Particularly useful for overtaking or hot laps is Push to Pass, a button releasing all 1,250 horsepower for brief bursts.
Though hybrid, the ZR1X is not designed to maximize fuel economy. Perfect for neighborhood stealth, the EV-only range is only modest 3 to 5 miles (5–8km) at speeds under 45 mph.
In first and second gears, torque is limited not to slow down the car but rather to protect the driveline and guarantee safe power delivery. As Chief Engineer Josh Holder pointed out, anyhow the tires are already at their grip limits. Designed for Speed, Costed to Compete
There will be convertible as well as coupe models. The ZR1X may tip the scales at almost 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg), in its heaviest spec, but Chevrolet argues strategic weight distribution and aerodynamic tuning will not compromise performance.
Although the pricing is not yet known, the $174,995 MSRP of the ZR1 will cause a change. Still, the hundreds of thousands of dollars the ZR1X will probably undercut hybrid hypercars from Ferrari, McLaren, and Porsche will be significant.
Chevrolet is building history with the ZR1X, not only quick cars.
