Nine teenagers have been arrested in connection with the June 24 shooting death of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina. Florence County sheriff’s deputies allegedly “partly captured on video” by one of the teenagers who killed him. Deputies found Wright’s body on June 24 with multiple gunshot wounds on First Neck Road, just outside of Johnsonville, and roughly 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, said last month that she “can’t even deal with it” but added, “I know it’s meant for me to go on and be strong and be his voice.”
In addition to multiple gunshot wounds that killed the 16-year-old, officials say the June 24 shooting was “originally over a girl” and started as a fight or argument. On Friday, three more teenagers were charged with murder and as an accessory to murder, respectively, in the case that prosecutors are handling as an adult.
Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye told The Sun News that one of the teenagers, 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway, had opened fire on Wright, who the teen knew, after an altercation between the two.
According to the sheriff, Wright was shot and killed by the teen. But “there were several” other teenagers who authorities say contributed to Wright’s death and lured him to the place where the shooter was stationed, after knowing he had a gun and was prepared to do him harm.
Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye said one of the accused fired the fatal shots at Trey Dean Wright after what was described as a “personal matter over a female.”

Days after finding the shooting victim’s body, deputies on June 25 arrested the alleged shooter, 19-year-old Raper. The other eight teenagers have since been arrested, and the most recent arrest included one of Wright’s former girlfriends and another was his “best friend.”
Sheriff Joye also said two of the teenagers that authorities arrested have already been charged with murder, while two others, including the accused shooter, face murder and additional charges.
“I am trying my hardest to keep it together. I keep crying because I just want to see his face or hear his voice. I know he is in a better place, but I wish it were here with me. Just praying everything works out with the court for the others because I’m his momma, and I want justice,” the mother wrote on her son’s obituary.
As of Sunday evening, five of the nine suspects remain in custody while four have been released on bonds ranging from $20,000 to $70,000. However, charges are likely to continue with more details revealed. Wright’s body was discovered by deputies with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office on First Neck Road in Johnsonville on June 24, at which point he had been shot several times. The rural road where Wright’s body was found is located about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. On June 25, 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Authorities allege Raper shot and killed Wright after what began as a verbal argument between the two men over a female acquaintance.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office has not commented further as the investigation into the shooting death continues. Prosecutors have also declined to provide additional information.
