Alien threat escalates in Apple TV+’s Invasion Season 3

If you haven’t been watching Invasion, chances are that you have at least heard of it. Invasion is one of several Apple TV+ flagship series this season, and, in particular, it finds itself battling for time and attention in a similarly ambitious Apple sci-fi-drama duo with Silo and Foundation. While having garnered a small but dedicated fanbase over its run, the series has also received mixed reviews, particularly in the early going, for feeling somewhat slow in the first season and falling short of its initial lofty ambitions.

The love/hate relationship with Invasion is not uncommon, even among viewers who generally enjoy the series. But it would also be difficult to argue with many of the show’s undeniable strengths. Invasion has almost always been beautiful to look at, from its cinematography to its visual effects. Its creators have also aspired to set a very bold, provocative tone for much of the series, even when the execution didn’t quite manage to catch up with the initial premise.

Now Apple has released a trailer for the show’s third season, which gives us an indication that the series might be ready to step fully into its own. In some ways, the series has had lofty ambitions from the start: Invasion was created by David Weil, the producer and writer behind Hunters, and Simon Kinberg, who is best known as the screenwriter and producer on several X-Men films and as the Oscar-nominated producer and screenwriter of The Martian. Invasion has always offered a compelling, unique premise, which has seen the “alien invasion” story through the eyes of ordinary people around the world.

It takes place on a global scale, but it’s humanized by both casting, with many actors speaking in English, Japanese, and Pashto, as well as by its basic premise. The threat of the invasion looms from the very beginning of Season 1, but the early going of the season focused on the beginnings of the invasion itself. The aliens sometimes took a backseat to the storylines of personal conflict and interpersonal drama among the main characters. For those viewers hoping for more from the titular Invasion, these creative choices were a bit disappointing. But those choices have also set the stage for a very different kind of sci-fi drama.

Season 1 ended on the heels of the “final stage” of the alien invasion, but at the beginning of Season 2, this full-scale attack had already arrived. As a result, Season 2 was a welcome shakeup of the first season, with more action and higher stakes that gave it a more urgent momentum and focus. The season dove into the ways that the characters who had survived the first stage of the alien threat would adapt to a completely different world. Small enclaves of humanity were essentially forced to hunker down and hide out in protected safe zones, with little hope for survival outside of the lucky few. As the season progressed, the show was still slow-burning, but the narrative shifted in the right direction for Invasion to find its footing.

Season 3 Brings the Show’s Characters Together for the First Time in Show-Stopping Ways

Season 3 picks up two years after the previous season, and the threat has evolved in even more terrifying ways. The premise makes it clear that the series will bring its disparate perspectives to a head for the first time. The main characters from around the world are all coming together for the first time in the series on a dangerous mission. In short, they’re going to try to infiltrate the alien mothership. The collaboration of characters, all previously separated by oceans and in different circumstances and storylines, marks a turning point for the series.

The aliens have also evolved, having reached their “apex” form, where they can extend deadly tendrils across the planet in rapid succession. If it hasn’t been already, the stakes have never been clearer. Only by combining all of the knowledge, resources, and determination of the show’s scattered survivors is there any hope of standing up to the alien menace. As the characters band together in preparation for this mission, new friendships and relationships will be forged while some old bonds will be tested to the point of breaking.

Season 3 will feature the return of Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as the divisive tech entrepreneur Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. But the cast will also welcome a new addition to the main ensemble in the form of Erika Alexander, who will also be joining as a series regular.

Story-wise, this next season will also have a lot of room to maneuver and a ton of expectations to live up to. After several years of teasing and gradually building up to this level of the alien threat, Season 3 has the potential to finally bring some satisfying closure to some of the longer storylines in the series. This season may also be the one that finally gives viewers the intense, large-scale alien action and set pieces that have been lacking to date. If Invasion has truly grown into itself, it should be able to find the right balance between its character-driven approach and the more bombastic side of an alien-invasion story.

Season 3 of Invasion will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 22, 2025.
