Apple’s Foundation Is Going Bigger, Darker, and Wilder in S3

Apple TV+ has released the first trailer for the upcoming third season of its blockbuster sci-fi series Foundation. The expensive, big-budget series is a loose adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s classic science fiction novel series of the same name. The trailer promises a full-on crisis for the galaxy, an explosion of colossal proportions, and the arrival of one of the author’s most iconic villains: the eponymous Mule. The new season of Foundation will launch on Apple TV+ on July 11, 2025, with new episodes arriving each week until the season finale on September 12, 2025.

Foundation had taken many liberties with the source material before even reaching season 3. The third season of Foundation is due to premiere on July 11, 2025. The pilot episode of season 1 ended with the story 138 years in the future. The entire second season was about the Second Crisis that humanity would face, a name for the event that was briefly mentioned in Asimov’s story. The Second Crisis involved a massive expansion in power by the Foundation and the increasingly obvious threat of war against the Galactic Empire. But the Foundation made their move, turning religion into an instrument of war and galactic conquest. We also met the “Mentalics,” a secret colony of people with extraordinary psionic powers.

Season 3 of Foundation then jumps 152 years ahead, according to Apple TV+’s synopsis, landing the story in the midst of what’s known in the Asimov Foundation universe as the Third Crisis. The Foundation is a much more established and powerful force, with stronger foundations and greater overall influence than it had in the days of its youth. The ruling Cleonic Dynasty is also on the back foot for the first time, with the vast galaxy seemingly in its grasp slipping away. With internal politics and external threats alike weighing on them, the two rival powers find themselves reluctantly banding together. To do battle against a rising menace that has the power to turn all their efforts back to dust. The Mule, a conquering warlord with the military might of a galactic empire and the power to control minds.

“You predicted the collapse of the galaxy. So you created the Foundation to save us. But always, the dark was the catalyst.” Hari Seldon’s (Jared Harris) voiceover kicks off the trailer with a dire warning: the events of season 3 are the moment of impact in the battle for the galaxy. Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) is the next voice we hear, a familiar face from season 1 with a newfound sense of authority. “We’re out of time.”

The trailer’s new baddie is the Mule, played by Pilou Asbæk, and he’s as much a psychopath as he is psychohistorian. “I can turn your enemies into your friends. Hate into love. I just have to nudge you,” he cackles. “A little in the right direction, and you’ll do what I want.” Full-on action sequences punctuate the trailer: explosions, gunfights, and even an entire city coming apart at the seams. The Mule appears to be a force with very far-reaching influence, and it looks like a lot of soldiers to take him on.

Lee Pace, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann will reprise their roles as the three cloned emperors, Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk, respectively. Jared Harris and Lou Llobell will also reprise their key roles as Hari Seldon and Gaal Dornick, and Laura Birn will continue her role as the powerful and mysterious Eto Demerzel, the android leader of the Foundation.

In addition to a new and significant villain, season 3 has an expanding cast. Alexander Siddig will play Dr. Ebling Mis, a self-proclaimed scholar of Hari Seldon and “lay psychohistorian” who has become a passionate advocate of psychohistory. Troy Kotsur plays Preem Palver, who is described in the official synopsis as the “Supreme Scientist of a planet of psychics.” Cherry Jones joins the cast as Foundation ambassador Quent. Other new cast members include Brandon P. Bell as Han Pritcher, Synnøve Karlsen as Bayta Mallow, Cody Fern as Toran Mallow, Tómas Lemarquis as the flamboyant Magnifico Giganticus, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing as Song, and Leo Bill as Mayor Indbur.

And So the Galaxy Tilts, on an Axis of Uncertainty

Foundation’s “psychohistory” is the series’ bread and butter and Asimov’s most enduring contribution to science fiction. But it’s beginning to show its limits in this trailer. It looks like the battle against the Mule will challenge and test Seldon’s model of psychohistory, and what that means for the survival of the model. This battle will be about a whole lot more than just making the most accurate predictions. Can you save the galaxy if the strongest weapon at your disposal is history itself, and you don’t have it anymore?

This season, it feels like Foundation is entering a new dimension of scope. There are more emotions at stake, and the cost of failure could be the whole of humanity. The trailer is stunning as ever visually, with an eye-popping level of detail and galaxy-spanning spectacle. We still get a sense of the deep and almost personal stakes in the moments that count, when our heroes are truly put to the test. We see glimpses of those familiar faces, played by the same actors we’ve spent so long with. In new circumstances and a new galaxy.

If Foundation has spent the first two seasons setting the pieces of Hari Seldon’s long-term plan into motion, season 3 is when they find out whether that plan can weather an event that wasn’t in the original calculations. The Mule might not just be a threat to galactic peace, but also the idea of a predictable future.
